The contents of Ingmar Bergman's house on the island of Fårö, off the coast of Gotland, will be auctioned by Bukowski's in Stockholm on 28th September. The sale includes Bergman's writing desk, a number of his film awards and an Edvard Munch lithograph of the great Swedish playwright, August Strindberg. Bidding for the auction of the house itself (handled by Christie's) closed in the last week of August.
It is, in my view, an enormous shame that the house could not have been saved (by the Swedish state or by wealthy benefactors) for the use of the general public and as a record of the life of one of the greatest film directors of the twentieth century and Sweden's arguably most significant cultural personality of our time.
