The situation of Stockholm on islands, on a plain and on rocky hills, surrounded by water and island in almost every direction is exceedingly picturesque…. The most striking peculiarity of the city lies in the fact that it lies in immediate proximity with primeval forests and rocky islands, where to this day there is hardly a trace of civilisation.
So reads the 1889 Baedeker guide to the city of Stockholm. These words are equally apt today; one of the most striking features of Stockholm is the close conjunction between raw nature and urban culture. A visitor is able to enjoy the rich cultural aspects of a cosmopolitan city while at the same time benefiting from the exceptional natural beauty of the Stockholm Archipelago on one side of the city and the restful tranquillity of Lake Mälaren on the other.
Stockholm, with its watery environs, expansive parks and striking architecture is a magical city. It is culturally rich with a wealth of museums and galleries, theatre and opera houses as well as excellent restaurants and lively bars and nightclubs. There are also many places of historical and cultural interest in the near vicinity of Sweden's capital city including the exceptional Baroque Castle, Skokloster near the medieval city of Uppsala and the Viking island of Birka on Lake Mälaren.
Stockholm itself is built on fourteen islands, the original settlement of the city being on the island now called Gamla Stan, the Old Town founded in the mid-thirteenth century. This part of Stockholm still retains a medieval feel with its latticework of cobbled streets and charming gabled houses. By contrast the elegant district of Östermalm comprises broad boulevards and waterside cafés while Södermalm, the trendy south island is full of lively bars, cutting edge boutiques and a vibrant street life.
In the summer, Stockholm is light until past midnight and the so called ‘blue hour' the twilight hour that begins about 10.00 pm bathes the city in a magical light that is a sight to behold. The streets of the city come alive and there are a wealth of activities to offer to the curious visitor who can marvel at Stockholm's Nordic luminescence.
