Uppsala with it's beautiful setting on the Fyrisån River, is Sweden's oldest university city as well as the ecclesiastical centre of Sweden, being the seat of the archbishop of the church of Sweden. The city's cathedral has a spectacular Gothic interior. The eighteenth century house and gardens of one of Uppsala University's most famous alumni, the botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) are a treat to behold.
The interntionally-acclaimed film director, Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala and the city was a key inspiration for many of his films including Wild Strawberries. Several scenes from Fanny and Alexander and Good Intentions were shot in the the city.
