Stockholm, Uppsala and the Baroque magic of Skokloster

Friday

Evening - Arrive at the hotel and enjoy a quiet dinner.

Saturday

10.00 - One and a half hour private boat tour of Stockholm. A chance to get a good overall impression of the city and its magnificent setting on twelve islands as well as an opportunity to see the spectacular inner Archipelago.

12.00 - Boat returns to the harbour.

12.30 - Visit to Östermalm's elegant nineteenth century covered foodhall. Lunch at the top fish restaurant Lisa Elmqvist.

3.00 - A visit to Rosendal Slott with a guided tour of the manor house. Rosendal was a summer home for King Karl XIV Johan (the first of the Swedish Bernadotte kings and Napoleon I's former general, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte) and his beautiful wife Désirée

Evening - Champagne and canapés at a privately owned late nineteenth century Stockholm townhouse. Optional dinner at Prinsen restaurant, an excellent, lively restaurant specializing in Scandinavian and Modern European food.

Sunday

Morning - Guided tour of Stadshuset (the townhall) where the Nobel prize dinner is held every year. This visit will be followed by a guided walking tour of Stockholm to include Gamla Stan (the Old Town). Pass the homes and haunts of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman.

Afternoon - Car to meet to drive us to Thielska Gallery, we will have a private guided tour of the museum. Return to hotel by bus.

Evening - Optional dinner at the historic Pelikan restaurant, specialising in Husmanskost (traditional Swedish homemade food).

Monday

Late morning - Boat trip along the stunning Lake Mälaren to Drottningholm, the royal summer palace. A chance to visit the unique eighteenth century Drottningholm theatre which came alive during the time of Gustav III. Guided tour of the interior of this beautifully preserved theatre by museum staff. Discover the Petit Trianon of Stockholm with a guided visit of Kina Slott, the Chinese Pavilion set in the expansive gardens of Drottningholm and built in 1753 for Queen Louisa Ulrika as a birthday present from King Adolf Fredrik.

Take your time to enjoy the vast amount to see at Drottningholm as well as the magnificent lakeside setting, we can have lunch in a restaurant on the grounds. A boat will return us to Stockholm in the afternoon.

Evening - Traditional smorgasbord dinner at the Grand Hotel verandah restaurant with fabulous views of the water and the Royal Palace.

Tuesday

Early morning - Train to Uppsala, Sweden's oldest university city. Taxi into central Uppsala. Visit to Uppsala cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of the church of Sweden.

Lunch at a riverside restaurant.

14.00 - Guided tour of the gardens and house of Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), the great Swedish botanist and zoologist. The tours are given by a botanist from Uppsala University.

16.00 - Private guided walking tour of the city of Uppsala focusing on Ingmar Bergman (seeing the house where he was born and locations for the shooting his films) and Uppsala University.


Evening - Boat trip to Skokloster. Boat departs along the Fyrisån River and out into Lake Ekoln to the stunning Baroque Castle of Skokloster. We will have a leisurely dinner on the boat journey. Being Swedish summer it will of course be light so this will be an opportunity to see the Uppland countryside.

Arrive at Skokloster Värdshus, the lakeside country house hotel directly opposite the stunning seventeenth century Baroque castle of Skokloster Värdshus.

Wednesday

Morning - Breakfast at the hotel followed by a guided tour of Skokloster castle.

Lunch at Skokloster Värdshus.

Private bus back to central Stockholm for return flights.
